My way to interim management — Sandi White

Written by BBTP Team | Dec 15, 2025 7:28:37 AM

Today, Sandi White is an independent expert who helps companies take charge of their workflows. But her career began long before she launched her own business.

Sandi's way to interim management is a journey of personal and professional discovery.

We sat down with Sandi for our ongoing #Way2InterimManagement series to hear what led her to go independent. Her story is a welcome reminder that good work comes from knowing who you are and what you want.

Sandi White, project manager and agile leader

Sandi White has always been a project manager. Starting out in community management and moderation, Sandi excelled at moving projects forward. Gradually, she was given leadership roles, and that’s when her career started to take shape.

“I spent eight years in director roles within a social media management agency based out of London. That’s when I felt like my career really got started.”

During this time, Sandi became a certified Agile PM practitioner. She was the first to introduce Agile project management practices to the agency and led teams of more than 150 people across multiple countries.

“I was leading community management projects where the team was taking content from clients in English and localising it for more than a dozen different regions. It was incredibly multilingual and multicultural.”

She recalls one memory from a potato-chip brand where an ad proposal featured the phrase “a chip on your shoulder”. Linguistic nuance, imagery, and cultural context all collided when it landed with confusion in the Spanish market. Sandi’s team had to rework the content entirely.

“It was a stressful situation that I can laugh about now but it was also an important lesson. Different regions have distinct cultures and so do different companies. I've learned to adapt to the present challenge AND its present context.”

From a cancer diagnosis to a career shift

In December 2021, Sandi received a cancer diagnosis that forced her to step away from agency life. After surgery and a long recovery, she experienced a secondary diagnosis in early 2024, which led to three major lung resections and a Stage 4 classification.

“When people hear Stage 4, they often think, my God, you're going to die tomorrow. But no, it’s not like that at all.”

In Sandi’s case, the classification means that her cancer is not terminal but needs to be managed. She is very open about the ongoing role cancer plays in her life and is happy to report that it is being managed very successfully.

“Having cancer—as you can imagine—has been a transformative experience. Throughout my diagnoses, surgeries, and recoveries, I’ve had the time to reflect on what I want to do and how I want to live.”

While recovering from her last surgery, Sandi had the space and freedom to imagine her next phase of life. After much reflection, she decided to launch her own business and focus on exactly the work she enjoys and excels in.

“I’ve turned a corner in my life and am now focusing on what I really want for my future.”

A strategic and value-driven path forward
Sandi knew she wanted to start her own business, but like many new independents, she faced the classic early-stage questions:

“Where do I begin? What do I offer? How do I structure a business around my strengths?”

The breakthrough came when she discovered a coach specialising in consulting development for women. The program recognised that many women launch their businesses at a different pace — often juggling more responsibilities or needing more time for reflection. This supportive, cohort-based environment gave Sandi the practical advice and community to move from idea to execution.

In July 2025, Sandi launched her business. As she secures and impresses her first clients, she remains closely connected to the community of women she trained with.

“I am being proactive to combat the often-solitary life of a solopreneur. I’ve got a great support network for the administrative side, which allows me to give more energy and attention to my clients.”

Optimising workflows and developing processes

Rather than positioning herself as a general project manager, Sandi chose to carve out a specific focus in workflow and process development.

Her niche includes:

  • Workflow and process design
  • HR and operational workflows, especially for growing teams
  • People-first workflows and processes
  • Support for scaling organisations that need structure but can’t yet justify a full-time HR or operations director
  • Clarity-oriented process creation: responsibility mapping, decision paths, approval flows, and cross-team handovers

One of her offerings, the HR Strategic Workflow Reset, distills her expertise into a focused two-week engagement.

Over a two-week period, Sandi reviews three priority workflows and identifies 3-5 opportunities for immediate improvement. The deliverables include workflow maps, Standard Operating Procedures and RACI templates, plus a 90-day action plan to help embed change. Implementation support is then available for clients who want hands-on help rolling out the changes.

Consulting vs. interim leadership, depending on the need

Sandi is from the UK, now based in Spain, and operating her business internationally. Like a large portion of interim managers, Sandi is equally open to consulting and interim roles, depending on the company’s needs. Her work is adaptable:

  • Consulting engagements focus on assessment, clarity, and system design
  • Interim assignments provide embedded leadership and implementation

"The common thread is my passion for helping companies grow with purpose, whether by fixing messy processes or building new ones from scratch."

Building a portfolio of value-driven assignments

One thing Sandi loves about being independent is that she can choose clients aligned with her values. Industries like gambling or tobacco don’t fit her principles, but many creative agencies, social media teams, and start-ups do.

Sandi’s dream clients include charities, especially those working in women’s health or cancer support. Having benefited personally from a cancer charity after her diagnosis, she wants to give back. She knows that even small operational improvements can create a large long-term impact for organisations working with limited budgets.
